I find that, when writing bios, it’s really helpful to look at a list or a chart like the one above. Picking two or three traits from each chart and building a character based around them will give you a really interesting bio, because they will serve as a reminder that characters need depth and dimension.

Independent and clever.

VS.

Independent, clever, pretentious, and stubborn.

The first combination doesn’t come with any flaws, whereas the second will provide a more dynamic character.

HEY GUYS, this showed up on my dash this morning, and I thought it would be helpful if any of you are writing characters and don’t want them to come out as picture-perfect Mary Sues! :)

One thing I’d like to add, though, is that you should make sure the character traits don’t conflict in an oxymoronic way…. for example: Ambitious and lazy, or patient and impulsive. WAT. (Believe it or not, I HAVE seen it happen before! Don’t do it!!)

Winnemem Wintu Tribe closes McCloud River during war dance (press release link here)

“Winnemem Wintu Tribe members joined with members of other Indian Tribes and environmental activists in kayaks and rafts to place a banner over the McCloud River on Lake Shasta proclaiming “River Closed” on Saturday, May 26.

The direct action took place in conjunction with the Tribes’s four-day War Dance (H’up Chonas in the Winnemem language) held from May 24 to May 27 at the site where they have held their Coming of Age ceremonies for thousands of years.

The War Dance signified the tribe’s spiritual commitment to defend at all costs the ceremony from heckling, flashing and other disruptions by recreational boaters that have occurred in previous years…

After the closure banner had been in place for over an hour, U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Coast Guard officials demanded that the banner be taken down. To avoid arrests, the Tribal members and activists complied with the request; this was a “practice run” for the upcoming Coming of Age ceremony.

“We have been backed into a corner with no other choice,” said Caleen Sisk, Winnemem Wintu spiritual leader and chief. “We should be preparing for Marisa’s ceremony, setting down prayers, making regalia, getting the dance grounds ready, making sure it happens in a good way. But instead we have to fight simply to protect our young women from drunken harassment.”

At the end of the War Dance on the river on Sunday, there was a massive, apparently orchestrated disturbance that demonstrated the exact reason why a closure of the river to all boating traffic by the Forest Service is so badly needed.

A fleet of 10 boats and jet skis motored through the ceremony at high speeds, flipped off tribal members, did doughnuts near their sacred sites and generally tried to intimidate the teens, elders and young women who made up most of the people left, according to the Tribe…

What other religion would ever face that level of intimidation and fear for simply wanting to hold a spiritual ceremony in peace?”

Some of my comrades in Cascadia Forest Defense/EarthFirst!/Klamath Justice Coalition went to work in solidarity with the Winnemem Wintu to close McCloud River this weekend, to help defend their coming of age ceremony from drunken racists.

This is just another example of how evil the Forest Service is. Fuck white people.

The Winnemem Wintu are doing an amazing thing and should be lauded. They deserve all the support in the world and massive praise for their strength, courage, and perseverance.

That said, I just want to point out that organizations such as EarthFirst and the various extensions of the Cascadia movement are, no matter how much “solidarity” they theoretically provide, colonizers. They are no less evil than the Forest Service. The fact that both movements (and especially local chapters) prefer to create new nations and structures of power on indigenous lands cannot go unnoticed. As a local to this area I can confidently say without a doubt that both such organizations are deeply embedded in systems of privilege, and by association race and class supremacy rooted in colonial legacies that remain in place to this day. I don’t care how inclusive of indigenous peoples these new imaginary nations could possibly be—at the end of the day, it’s a “sharing” of power rather than cession, and is thus nothing more than a watered down recycled form of colonialism supported by discourses based on deeply problematic environmentalisms and a flawed logic of solidarity based on neoliberal multiculturalism and a white civil rights agenda. The very idea of nations comprised of indigenous peoples alongside non-Natives (and led presumably by a coalition of both) is based on the assumption that non-Natives will not be forced to cede lands or power, and are somehow being generous and ‘radical’ enough to recognize indigenous rights if they feel like it and as long as indigenous peoples are “willing” to share. The fact that non-Natives are put in a position of power, in which to make such offers to indigenous peoples, means that these new nations will be built on the precise system of colonial white supremacist power relations they allegedly aim to rid us of. This is not radical, or anywhere near decolonization.

Decolonization is not the symbolic offering of shared power, and decolonization is most certainly not the allowance of theoretical shared land. Those lands have and will always be first and foremost indigenous lands. I believe very strongly in Freire’s definition of solidarity, which is to literally and figuratively put oneself on the side of the oppressed; if organizations such as EarthFirst and Cascadia were to truly be in solidarity, they would campaign for indigenous sovereignty and repatriation of lands, rather than the washed up recolonial garbage they largely purport currently.

i’m pretty much going to school to be able to lay it out like emeraldtriangleprincess. The Winnemum Wintu are holding their Balas Chonas, or Coming of Age ceremony, on the same site in late June and Early July. Their sacred site has been turned into a campground that they need to rent… to hold a sacred ceremony for the next female chief of the Winnemum Wintu tribe on Winnemum Wintu land. I know that a lot of people associated with Earth First! and Cascadia are colonialist dickwads, but there are some folks that are beginning to check their privilege and struggle towards true solidarity. It’s not true solidarity yet, and I’m not exactly sure of the path down to real liberation for them/us, and only hopeful that the fuck ups in the learning will not beat out potential white radical service in allyship at calls to action like this one, but… I think there is a tiny little glimmer of hope…

The above article is an update. Her mother went to appeal to keep her out of the psychiatric ward and lost. She will be institutionalized because of her expression of her gender. She will be held until she conforms to male gender and then released to foster care, not her mother who was supporting her.
